914 not starting

Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1974; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.0; Total Mileage: 150,000;

While trying to diagnois a problem with intermitent loss of power and mis-firing (goes away after turning off engine, but always returns) I made the mistake of not cranking the car to confirm that it still ran before I started trying things. So I do not know if I created a new problem. Disconnected and checked cold resistance of head temp sensor...reconnected. Pulled, cleaned and reinstalled 3 relays in relay board. Replaced fuses in relay board. Pulled, cleaned, and reconnectd 3 rear-most connectors. Did nothing to voltage regulator or front most connector. When tried to crank, it did not turn over...wiggled equipment mentioned above and started turned no fuel pump sound...more wiggling and now have fuel pump. Have confirmed getting no spark out of coil...replaced coil...still no spark. Engine started fine last startup a few weeks ago, so I can't believe the points/condenser have gone bad. Is there something to do with the relays or the connectors through the relay board that would prevent a spark and what would you recommend?Also what do you think of replacing points/condenser with solid state ignition...something a non-mechanic could do?Thanks, Jay
