915 shift selector shaft seal '74 911

I am trying to replace a leaking seal on the selector shaft. I notice that I must have the original still on the case. It looks to be brass or anodized steel, with green rubber or plastic inside. This seems to be a difficult seal to remove. Not like an aftermarket seal where you can rip and pull it out. What it the best way to remove this seal? I hope I do not have to remove the gearbox. Or do I? I was able to get most of the green out with a pick, and the spring retainer out. Am I on the right path? Also the seal seems to be sitting not quite flush, it is inside the case a bit.
