This is a two part.

I have two 944's still in use and a third that I have junked. All three have suffered steering coupler failure (part # 944 347 027 01). All three are in the 95,000 to 110,000 mile range. The '83 has a slightly worn out lower cardan joint. It has, so far, not had a driving issue. The '85 has a very worn lower cardan joint that "locks" sometimes during all phases of driving. This is extremely scary when you are in a sweeper at speed and have to really force the steering wheel to straighten. The '86, which was junked two years ago, had both cardan joints worn out and rough motion. I never had the opportunity to drive it to see what problems might occur.

Part one is that I have filed NHTSA reports for the '83 and '85 and want you to pass on this information so that others can check their cars and report defects to NHTSA.

Part two is where can I obtain a NEW coupler? Porsche shows this as no longer made! I have found a rebuilt part on the web, but I am dubious as to trusting my life to this.

Thanks,

Scott Lambert
