944 Sun Roof

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 111,000;

One more question on 944 Sunroof operation. My son just bought a 1987 944 (on EBay) and it is generally very sound. The previous owner indicated that it needed "rear sun roof clips". The car has an electrical sunroof, but the owners manual is not very instructive. When we operate the switch, there is an electrical motor noise, but no movement. When I push up on the roof, it moves up and down freely (I suspect that this is not a good thing!). However, I don't see anything that looks like a clip or locking mechanism (it is still cold and rainy in New England, so I'm not yet very ready to take the roof apart). After reading all of your posts, I suspect that we will have to disassemble the sunroof transmission, replace the plastic gears and reset the timing. If so, it will be my least expensive Porsche repair ever. However, I noticed an add for a "Roof Latch Rear" for "Manual roof only". These things are $105 each, so I don't want to buy anything I don't need. My questions: Are there manual sunroofs for 944 that have different latches than electrical ones? If I don't need a latch, will replacement of the gears assure that the top won't fly off? Is there a reference that provides a picture or diagram of the electrical sunroof mechanism?
