964 ECU Replacment Options

Vehicle Information: Year: 1990; Body Type: Cabriolet; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.6L Weltmeister Chip, Intake, Exhaust, LW Flywheel; Total Mileage: 74,000;

Last weekend my car suddenly died right in the middle of a PCA Drivers Education event. I coasted into pit lane and got some help to check fuses, fuel, spark and replaced the DME relay - all to no affect. I had the car towed to a shop who diagnosed the problem as a dead ECU. A previous owner had chipped the car with a Weltmeister performance chip. When they opened the ECU they found a "burned" area on one of the circuit boards. We were able to source a "loaner" ECU and the car appears to be running fine.The car may be fine, but I was left with chest pains and gasping for air when I found out what a replacement ECU goes for these days! It's damn near criminal! What are my ECU replacement options? Can anyone repair these things? How does a fried 3 cent resistor leave you with a $$$ replacement bill?
