964 engine lid light

The battery just went dead the other day and would not charge all the way. I figured the battery was bad since the car wasn't driven much the past couple years. However, I noticed suddenly that the engine lid light will not shut off. I pulled the switch to verify that the ground is interupted at that point but the light still stays on. At the lamp housing there appears to be three wires: a red constant power, and a brown/red and a brown/white. Both browns are connected at the same terminal. The brown/white goes to the switch but I have no idea where the brown/red goes. Any ideas? I've pulled the lamp so I'm assuming there shouldn't be any more power draw from that source. In fact, the battery seems to have charged properly now after removing the lamp. Thanks for your help.
