!984 911 Carrera Alternator

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1984; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): stock; Total Mileage: 151,000;

I had my car in the shop for a major tune-up and the owner of the shop let the one and half year old battery of a five year battery run down by leaving the key turned on. When my son picked the car up, the mechanic brought a quick charged machine out to jump the car and left it connected to the battery while the car was running for approximately 5-10 minutes. Would this ruin my alternator?? Within days my electrical warning light is on and I am told that I need a new alternator. I replaced the original alternator in 1992 with a rebuilt one. Could any time left hooked to the quick charger with the car running in am attempt to 'recharge' the battery in any way possibly affect my alternator?
