993 Replacing Engine Main Seal

Engine

Vehicle Information: Year: 95; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 40,000;

I recently was told that my '95 Carrera 4 needs a new main seal because the original is leaking - at 40,000 miles I guess that is surprising to me. I dearly love the car, love driving it - daily, long trips (planning on Boise this summer), and drivers schools are all a hoot!I probably won't do the work till this spring when I prep the car for Ohio Valley's Annual Drivers School at Mid-Ohio (best course I have ever been on - total of 3). My mechanic said to "watch it" between now and then and that we should decide if we need to replace the clutch at that time when we have everything apart.I wonder if anyone knows what "to watch for" since I didn't notice the leak before the service call, nor do I see any evidence of it now either! I am not adverse to any of the maintenance of the car, but at 40,000 miles it seems a bit early for a main seal and a clutch? Any comments?
