996 Engine Shield Heat / Airflow Concerns

Vehicle Information: Year: 2002; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 5,800;

Having read a previous post regarding 996 engine damage after bottoming out, I have become increasingly willing to install a steel engine cover. I am concerned that in the summer heat after hard driving, the engine may end up running hotter than it should and thus less efficiently.Have any independent studies been made regarding the heat implications of 996 engine covers? And, if this is a meaningful parameter, could I punch my own holes in the cover to provide protection and ventilation? Thanks in advance.
