996 oil pan damage

Engine

Vehicle Information: Year: 1999; Body Type: Convertible; Total Mileage: 15k;

I recently damaged my oil pan (actually not a pan but the flat cover) by contacting a piece of debris.After inspecting, I found the left rear bolt (1 of 13) was very badly scraped and a slight crack appeared in the cover over the bolt. This is the lowest extending piece of the engine.The dealer inspected and said that I should replace the cover and also install a "shield" (that Porsche already had available) to prevent this from happening in the future. Total $500Upon futher inspection, the dealer discovered that the block (where the bolt screwed up into) was also cracked and recommended an entire new engine. (Total $11,000+)Finally, my questions: Has this been a chronic probems with early 996s? Have the later models 2000s, 2001s ,2002s been modified to protect the oil "pan" ?
