I have a 2005 996 Turbo S and hope you can help clear up what I consider total confusion and guessing on the part of 996 turbo owners.  For more than 15 years, I’ve watched individual’s on forums guess and surmise why the various 996 Turbos have different part numbers for their muffler/exhaust.  I’ve seen the following part numbers discussed:

  1. 996-111-987-72
  2. 996-111-987-74
  3. 996-111-987-75
  4. 996-111-987-76

Some say the TT, TTS, X50 option, and GT2 have the different model numbers because the exhausts are different; even if different just means one less internal baffle.  Others say although the part numbers differ, there is no physical difference in the mufflers.  Typically, Porsche changes nothing unless there is a valid reason.  My 993 has parts on it with 964 numbers so why would the part numbers across the 996 TT be changed for no reason?

Can you help clarify once and for all if the exhausts on the standard 996 TT, TTS, GT2, and X50 optioned TT are the same, or whether there is some real physical difference?

It appears now that the PET only shows one or two part numbers available.  Unsure about that as well.

Thanks in advance.
