Air Duct for Engine Cooling Fan

Engine

Model: 993, Year:1996, Mileage:60500, Type of use:Street use only
I recently noticed a hole in the top of the air duct for the engine cooling fan in my '96 993. The material around the hole in the duct was also very brittle and broke off easily. I am told that replacing the duct requires the engine to come out of the car. Is there an alternative? Also, I have taped up the hole temporarily. Is this solution OK? Thanks.
