battery or alternator?

Vehicle Information: Year: 1983; Body Type: Targa;

My electrical system went out slowly as I drove home for work. Frist the CD player, then the headlights, dash, electric windows, and then the car started missing until I had to pull over and park. Car would not start. I pulled the battery out and discovered it was 8 years old, and replaced it. The car started back up and got me home fine.I don't think the alternator has been replaced, and this is the first electrical problem I have had with the car. I suppose it would make sense to have it tested.I see that there was moisture too under the battery vent tube. You recommend washing with baking soda which I will do. Should I apply a rubber coating afterwards to the bare metal, or some type of rust inhibtor paint in the battery area? Thank you for your insight.
