battery problem

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 SC; Year: 1981; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 88,000;

Recently I noticed my battery compartment was becoming corroded and moisture was present there. I removed the battery and discovered a hole on the side near the top next to the positive terminal. It seems to be venting from this spot. The left side near the top has a similar opening that is plugged. Should the right side opening be plugged also? This problem has recently occurred so I wonder if I have lost a plug from the right side. If this opening is normal, should I use some plastic tubing to route the battery moisture outside the vehicle? If that is the case, how should I proceed? The battery is manufactured by Douglas and carries a Porsche part number of 999.611.066.07.
