Battery problem when hot

Electrical

Vehicle Information: Year: 2002; Engine (Size, Modifications): 996 stock turbo, no modifications; Total Mileage: 24700;

I have a stock 2002 996 Turbo and have experienced what appeared to be a dead battery problem upon restart after it has warmed up. There is enough power left to pop the hood and when it is open, the car cranks over fine and starts immediately. I'm at a loss to understand how opening the hood ould cause that dramatic an electrical problem. It has happened numerous times with the same result. Appreciate any advice or suggestions.
