Boxster running out of gas

Fuel System

Vehicle Information: Year: 2000; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 19,500;

I was on the way to fill my tank the other day when the engine suddenly stopped running while idling at a stop light. The fuel light had been lit for about 5-6 miles and the car was on level ground when it stalled. I was able to restart the engine after cranking it over about 3-5 seconds and got it to the gas station across the street. After filling up, I noticed that it only took 15.3 gallons. The owner's manual says the fuel capacity is over 17 gallons, including a reserve. Did the engine stall because it was about to switch to "reserve"? Could I have actually driven 20-30 miles further?
