Boxster Seat Adjuster

I just picked up a new-to-me '99 Boxster with less than 30,000 miles. After the transporter dropped it off, i climbed in to drive the short distance to our house. To my horror, with the seat fully back, my knees were wedged behind the steering wheel and my head was ready to tear thru the roof. The drive home was less than smooth.

After studying the owner's manual and peering under the seat with light and mirror, i determined the height adjustment on the car's manual driver's seat is at full vertical extension. A lever at the side of the seat actuates a cable that moves a mechanism at the end of a small hydralic ram, like one would find on a hatchback. But this mechanism was not moving in response to the cable. On wiggling it a notched piece of metal about an inch and a half in length fell out.

My guess is that the seat has to come out so this height adjustment mechanism can be rebuilt or replaced.  Has anyone seen or dealt with a similar issue?
