Brake Caliper

Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1972; Engine (type, size, modifications): 1.7; Total Mileage: 240,000;

My right rear disc brake pad has been dragging. Disconnecting the emergency brake cable leads to a conclusion that the piston in the caliper is sticking. I've been told that I also need to replace no only the right rear caliper but also the left rear caliper for a proper post-repair operation. It does not seem logical to me to replace a caliper that is not mal-functionion on the opposite side of the car. Can I replace only the faulty caliper? Is the reason to believe that because one has failed, the other will soon fail? Besides replacing the pads, what else, if any, should be completed with the caliper repair?Thanks in advance for your help.
