Cabriolet top

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1987; Body Type: Convertible; Total Mileage: 96,000;

In considering replacement/repair for my cab top -- my top is the separate top (center) and rear (window) version. I never open the window without putting the top down. However, it's difficult to zip and unzip the window. 1--Is it necessary to unzip the window to lower the top (assuming the outside temp is warm enough, as the manual indicates)? Does this stress the top too much? 2 -- when replacing the top, there seems to be the option of replacing with a later version, which does not have a separate window section. Does this mean no zip-out window, and can it be used to replace the 87 version?
