Car continues to lose power while driving

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 turbo cab body; Year: 1986; Body Type: Convertible; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.0 sc engine in the car; Total Mileage: 43,000 on car and 50,000 on engine;

my problem is as i am driving the car it just loses power. it does not do it all of the time but frequently. when i am driving i can just put my foot on the clutch, turn the ignition off and on right away and the car will start right up and continue driving until the next episode.all of the gauges stay the same, they do not go to zero, but if i do not start the car right away the instrument lights will come on and the car will die out. i cannot pop the clutch while it is rolling and resart the car. what is the problem? my mechanic cannot find it. he has checked all of the wiring. but i think it has something to do with the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay or somthing tha gets hot and causes the car to turn off.could it be a wire from the distributor or spark plugs that is frayed or broken. please help me with this annoying. problem. there have been 2 times where i have out gas in the car and i smelled a strong oder of gas in the car. could it be a fuel line??? it will not do this if the car is just idling, only while drivingand not only on the freeway. thanks.
