Car will not start

Engine

Vehicle Information: Year: 1998; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5L Stock; Total Mileage: 47800; Transmission: Manual;

I own a 1998 Boxster with just under 48,000 miles. I went to start the car this morning. The engine turned over and roared to life then immediately quit. I attempted to restart but it seemed the starter was spinning freely. I did exit the car and use the remote to lock and unlock the car to reset the alarm. Subsequent attempts were the same, the starter turns but gives no sign the mortor is turning or will refire. I pulled the dip stick and it came out clean, no evidence of coolant. What am I looking at here, starter motor/solenoid failure, intermediate shaft failure, worse?ThanksEric
