Transmission and Clutch

Model: carrera, Year:1985, Mileage:157K, Type of use:Street use only
Recently, my clutch pedal went all the way to the floor and didn't spring back, just went limp like the cable broke. But the cable was not broken and the helper spring also looked good. I got a cable anyway thinking some internal stretching or wear, but upon pulling the old one out and putting the new cable in, realized nothing changed. The pedal cluster also looks to be in good working order. So I removed the clutch positioning lever and the clutch release lever to get a better look at the helper spring. the helper spring looks good. My question then is could a helper spring be the problem if it appears ok? there was no problem getting the release lever off with the helper spring causing springback. This made me think maybe the helper spring is worn out and just doesn't have the strength it needs to help disengage the clutch. However, before the pedal went limp, the clutch pedal certainly was not difficult to depress like a bad or nonexistent helper spring symptom. Now I am starting to worry its internal, like the clutch release fork or worse. Ideas? Thanks for your time.
