Clutch play

I'm wondering if it may be time to look at replacing the clutch or if there's an adjustment that can be made. When I push in the clutch (6 speed manual), the spring is definitely tough to depress (you can feel it). It does ease up as the car warms up. However, the clutch never fully comes back to its original position. There is almost always a bit of free play at the top of the clutch (when the pedal is released). I can flick the pedal up with my foot and that seems to eliminate the free play, but if I don't, it can be difficult to shift into 5th gear. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks for your help.Monte Olsen
