cockpit oil gauge

Vehicle Information: Year: 2000; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.7L, stock; Total Mileage: 26000; Transmission: Manual;

The oil level measurement gauge in the cockpit reads on the low side(barely within the required range)while the dipstick measures on the high side. Is this normal or is my gauge out of calibration? I should rely on the dipstick measurement as opposed to the oil level gauge, correct?
