cooling fan

Model: 944 turbo, Year:1986, Mileage:125000, Type of use:Street use only
I have a 1986 944 turbo with 125k miles, my daily driver. Reciently, both cooling fans started comming on when I turned the key on and stayed on as long as the engine was running. they would both go off when I shut off the ignition switch. Yesterday, they didn't come on when I turned the key on. I drove home and shut off the engine and the fans kept on running. I first assumed that I was back to normal opperation but when I returned to the garage a couple of hours later they were still running. I wound up pulling the fuses to shut them off. I also found that pulling the relay, and leaving the fuses in, also stopped the fans. I swapped out the relay with another older relay that I had from troubleshooting a previous problem a year ago. No change. How do I test the relay to see if it is the problem? What else do I need to check?I did replace the thermal switch in the radiator a year ago (the cause of the previous troubleshooting).
