Dash repair

Interior

Vehicle Information: Year: 1986; Engine (Size, Modifications): 3.3 turbo; Total Mileage: 61,000;

Just recently acquired this automobile. As I've seen in reviewing other questions, this too has dash problems. The vinyl dash cap has warped upward away from, and out from under the defroster register. A local independent interiors shop, (recommended by the local Porsche dealer) has indicated he can remove the dash, reshape the existing vinyl dash cap with a heat gun, and recover the cap. He speaks with such confidence and enthusiasm, I think I'm going ahead. Has anyone approached a dash repair this way?Additionally, since only the part of the dash nearest the windshield is the damaged(warped)portion, I wondered if the original leather could be left on the front. It would seem like the new vinyl cover, if it matched the leather color well, could be transitioned at the seam.Comments?
