detonation damage

I have been working to get rid of occasional and light detonation with a local well known independent, and for the most part have it cleared up, but am concerned that some folks say ANY detonation can cause damage. I have been very careful to back out of the throttle at the very first sign of any even slight knock, and while I do occasionally push the car hard, for the most part it is never hard accelerated into the rpm range where it begins to detonate. What types of damage does detonation cause, and can it be checked for without dismantling the engine in any form?
