Distributors belt

Vehicle Information: Year: 1992; Body Type: Cabriolet; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.6L; Total Mileage: 72K;

This past Saturday we went to our pca club tech. in Santa Cruz, California. The mechanic told me that if my 964 distributor belt broke, I can still drive the car because there are 6 spark plugs still working, but the other 6 spark plugs are not since my car has 12 plugs(2 per cylinder).He also said that the car won't be able to perform like all 12 plugs in running condition, but it still driveable. My car had all of the air-vented hoses installed to the distributors by factory since new. Was the mechanic correct? I have heard many distributors belts broke and destroyed valves. Thank you again.
