Downsizing wheels/tires for winter

Wheels and Tires

Model: 996 Carrera 2C, Year:2001, Mileage:19,000, Type of use:Street use only
I have read through most of the archive q&a regarding tires and wheels for winter use and I think I understand the issues (maybe??).My car came equipped with 18" Turbo Twist wheels (7.5 J front, 10 J rear), shod with Dunlop SR Sport 9090 summer tires (225/40 ZR 18 front, 265/35 ZR 18 rear). Since I live in the Chicago area and the car will be a daily, year 'round driver, I obviously need winter rubber.I have an opportunity to purchase a used set of identical 18" Turbo Twist wheels for mounting winter tires, but after reading the responses to a few previously submitted questions, I am thinking of downsizing to 17" wheels with 205/50 R 17 89 T M&S tires in front and 255/40 R 17 94 T M&S aft.Is this a good idea and would the reduced size wheels and tires just "bolt on"? The Owner's Manual shows different rim offsets (55/55 for the 17" wheels versus 50/65 for the 18"ers). Do these differences cause any problems? Is Tire Rack a feasible option or should I stick to Porsche OEM?
