Early 915 input shaft seal


Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1968; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.8L race motor; Total Mileage: unknown;

My race car has a '72 915 trans. It has no problems except for leakage around the input shaft seal, which is replaced from inside the housing. Is it possible to remove the Gear Housing complete without complete disassembly as described in my Haynes manual? It looks from the illustrations as if removal of the detent plugs etc. is all that is necessary to allow removal of the gear housing as a unit. Or do I have to do a complete disassembly?
