The engine does not crank

Engine

Vehicle Information: Year: 1979; Body Type: Coupe;

My engine does not crank. When I turn the key, I hear the CD box but the engine does not crank. This problem has been intermittent. The initial symptom was that the I would sometimes have to hold the key in the start position a little longer before the engine would crank. Other times it would crank immediately. Lately, though, I have been needing to hold the key a little longer. A couple of times, the engine would not start at all. I tried jumping the car and even changed the battery. Still no cranking. If I bump start the car, it runs fine. I am thinking it could be the battery cable, ignition switch, or starter. Am I on the right track? What order would you recommend checking these parts? How would I check them without having to buy new parts for testing? Is there anything else it could be? Thanks a bunch for any help you can give me.
