Engine Idle

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera 3.2; Year: 1985; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 24,500;

My 1985 Carrera 3.2 with about 24,000 miles on the clock has developed a periodic rough idle. Normally the engine idles at 900 rpms. Of late however, after about thirty seconds of idling, the rpms fall about 100 rpm and the idle becomes rough almost as if the engine has come under load. Blipping the throttle will restore the normal idle briefly. The drop-off is similar to, but not as pronounced as, the affect of removing the oil reservoir cap while the engine is idling. I have substituted DMEs with no change. I have replaced the idle air control valve with no success. The oxygen sensor is new. Could the problem be related to plugged injectors or a defective cylinder head temperature sensor? Could it be the temperature sensor in the air flow meter? Water in the gasoline? The car performs exceptionally good at running speeds.
