engine knocking

Model: 997S, Year:2008, Mileage:17000, Type of use:Street use only
I have a 2008 997s with about 17,000 miles on the odo. I bought the vehicle new a fastidiously followed the break in recommended in the manual. We are located in southern California and therefore unable to obtain the factory recommended 93 octane gas but I only put high quality (Shell) super unleaded fuel in my cars. Since day one my Porsche has exhibited occasional "pinging" or "knocking". Two dealers and one highly regarded local shop (as well as posts on Porsche centered online boards) tell me this isn't unusual in S.Ca and that I shouldn't worry. I have tried mixing some race gas (100 octane) in a few times and that helps but doesn't completely eliminate the issue (3 gallons 100 oct. And 13 gallons of 91). I can't believe this is normal or even good for my vehicle and previous sports cars with higher reving motors (2002 Honda S2000 & 1998 Acura NSX) never had this problem. Should I be worried about the long term effects this is having on my motor? Thanks, Christian Asis Dana Point, CA
