Engine lid and trunk shocks

Trunk and lid shocks fail to hold up over time, so my question is: could they last longer if they were 'relaxed' - while the car is laid up or wintering over, for example - by keeping both lids open and the struts extended - like they are when purchased and uninstalled?  Or, in other words, can static compression accelerate weakening or failure over time?  Right now, I consider it only my untested theory.  What say you? Thank you.
