Engine misfire

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1988; Body Type: Convertible; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2L; Total Mileage: 80700;

Occaissionally upon hard acceleration at approximately 5000 RPM engine begins to cut out, almost like it is running out of gas. Sometimes it recovers, other times the car comes to a complete stop and will not start for several minutes. During aborted start attempts white smoke (perhaps raw fuel) is emitted from tail pipe.After a few minutes engine will start and run perfectly, other times engine misfires and bucks at lower RPM and light engine loads. Then mysteriously, symptoms disappear for a period of time and then re-occur months or weeks later.Replaced O2 sensor but notice smell of fuel when heater is in use.
