engine noise

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1986; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 stock; Total Mileage: 120,000 ;

Recently purchased my 911, when driving the engine emits a whining sound, almost drowning out the exhaust. The sound increases with engine rpm and occurs when I am driving normally, reving with clutch depressed, reving in neutral,moving or standing.The car runs very well,pulls strongly in all gears, no hesitation, backfire etc. In my previous 72 911, I replaced a worn ring and pinion in my 915, which made a similar noise, but this sounds different, Almost like an air intake issue. This is only annoying because I can't fully appreciate the engine and exhaust sounds from inside the car, but worry there might be something more serious as well.Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
