engine removal vs. engine/transmission removal

Vehicle Information: Year: 1980; Body Type: Targa;

I want to drop my engine to repair some leaks, upgrade my chain tensioners, and perform a thorough clean-up while I'm at it. Is it better (easier) to remove the engine and tranny as a unit or remove the engine only? Searched through these archives and several manuals, but can't seem to get clear recommendation.
