Engine revs on startup

My understanding is that on startup, there should be initial, but brief, high engine revolutions (up to 1800 + )to quickley raise oil presssure. This then drops to back to the standard cold running idle. My 1999 Boxster does not do this. When starting the engine revolutions do not exceed about 1000 and the initial idle is rough for a few seconds only. The car otherwise performs perfectly. Is there a simple fix? Geoff
