Engine sound deadening adhesive

Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1973; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 140K;

On a recently acquired 1973 911 coupe, the engine sound deadening panel was not glued in, only being held by the shock towers at the bottom, the engine in the middle, and the metal clips at the top, I want to glue it in to stay.I have seen this issue addressed in the past, but can't remember where. I know I have read that people have tried different glues, adhesives, contact cements, etc. and have had problems. The engine is out of the car now, and I have a chance to do it right. What adhesive is recommended for this job? Spray on, brush on? Surface prep?
