Engine temerature fluctuation


Model: 944S2 Cab, Year:1991, Mileage:113000, Type of use:Street use only
I recently took my S2 Cab to the dealer and had them replace the belts/pulleys, steering rack and water pump. Although the previous water pump was working fine and the temp gauge sat around the lower white line all the time, the dealer recommended changing the pump since I've got 100,000+ miles on the car. After getting the car back, the temperature bounces from the lower white line to the top white line. Although I insisted there was a problem, the dealer was adamant that this was normal unless it ran in the red. I may be dumb, but I've owned three S2's and none of them have ever had the temp gauge bounce like this. Am I being a nuisance or should I insist on them checking this out?
