Erratic oil pressure

The last 2 times I've driven my car the oil warning light with the Failure Indicator text message appeared briefly a couple of times. I didn't notice what the pressure gauge reading was at the time the warning light was on but shortly thereafter it was at the 2 - 3 bar before eventually going back to a little above the 4 bar. It would sometimes even bury itself on the 5 bar for extended periods of time. Both times I was driving leisurely with a warm engine. My car normally runs above the 4 bar when driven but I don't remember it being at the 5 bar. The manual says this error message means the oil pressure indicator is faulty. Why does this only happen occassionally and how serious is this?
