exhaust popping at high revs 1987 930

Vehicle Information: Year: 1987; Engine (Size, Modifications): none; Total Mileage: 56,000;

Took the turbo out after its winter storage and everything runs right as rain except for this popping noise from the exhaust (that''s where it sounds like it''s coming from) when I''m accelerating hard at higher revs, say 4,500 to 6,000rpm. The engine hesitates during this popping. It''s like it''s choking on too much fuel. It didn''t do this last fall. I used stabilizer in the fuel last fall, and had about 1/2 tank of gas. Filled it up this spring and drove for a couple of hours very moderately just to warm things up properly. Then accelerated a couple of times & heard the popping. I used about 1/2 tank of fuel, added some fuel injector cleaner product and filled up again (Shell Super Gold 91 octane, which is what I always use). Still have the popping. And I''ve used about another tank of fuel.Any ideas what''s going on?
