front spoiler

Model: 996 Turbo Coupe, Year:2001, Mileage:60,000, Type of use:Street use only
The black piece of the front spoiler on my car is well chewed-up, primarily from dragging in gravel entering and leaving my driveway. I have now resolved the driveway issue and want to replace the spoiler. On most cars I would assume this to be primarily a cosmetic piece, but on this car I prefer to assume it has real functionality. How critical is it to front/rear balance? Are there better or cheaper aftermarket items to consider or should I simply replace with factory unit? Can you describe, briefly, the r&r process so that I might determine if it is something I want to tackle myself?
