fuel pump running continuously

Fuel System

Vehicle Information: Model: C4 964; Year: 1993; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.6; Total Mileage: 83000;

My fuel pump is running continuously and the buzzing is audible inside the car while driving and is becoming annoying. No loss of performance is evident.Can you tell me if the pump should pulse on- demand or run continuously. Is there a pressure switch somewhere that controls the pump on/off? And lastly, when the pump does run should it be audible or fairly silent and unobtrusive?I plan to pull it out and check the inlet port for restriction as advised in another post, and also replace the fuel filter to see if that helps. Perhaps I just need a new pump. Thanks.
