fuel tank vent on 1969 912

Fuel System

Vehicle Information: Model: 912; Year: 1969; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 1720 cc with weber carb. conversion; Total Mileage: 149,600;

The fuel tank vent hose on my recently purchased 1969 912 runs from the tank to a square box (I'm guessing this is a charcoal filter), and then from there it is stuck into the tube that runs through the smugglers box and vents out the pan. So, the rain water that comes in through the hood vent has nowhere to go but into the trunk. I believe rainwater should be going into the tube running through the smugglers box. Where should the fuel tank vent be going?
