Gas cap compartment lock

Body

Vehicle Information: Year: 1997; Engine (type, size, modifications): no mods; Total Mileage: 40000; Transmission: Manual;

I opened the fuel-gas-cap compartment while cleaning the car to find a grommet like object. It obviously fits in the hole where the lock plunger is located. The door still locks when I lock the car, but I can't find a diagram or picture of how this black plastic grommet is supposed to fit back in the body wall. I'm sure it's function is to keep the plunger in place. Where can I find a diagram/picture of this with instructions on installation?
