Gas pedal rod

Cables and Controls

I recently had to replace the spring that holds the throttle closed because the old one popped off. The spring I originally replaced with was too weak and the gas pedal would often get stuck. I then purchased a used spring from a junkyard and it was so tight that when I push on the gas pedal, the rod going from the pedal to the lever that pulls the throttle cable pops off the ball joint. After putting on the old spring i am still unable to get the rod to sit at the correct angle so as to move freely (it keeps hitting the body and popping off). Are there any special techniques for getting the angle on the rod correct, and what would you recommend for a spring replacement. Thanks for your time
