Head Gasket and Timing Belt


Vehicle Information: Model(924/944): 944; Year: 1985; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5 L, no mods; Total Mileage: 68,000;

My head gasket was replaced by a local shop late in the fall. My goal was to put 1,000 miles on the car, then take it back in to make sure all was okay. Just short of the 1,000 miles it stopped running.The shop told me that a bolt in the timing belt tensioner sheared off, causing the belt to slip. This bolt is apparently lodged somewhere near the water pump. Even though the car stopped running at virtually idle revs, I'm very concerned that pistons hit valves. I've changed the timing belt religiously and I'm sick over this.Here's my question -- I asked whether they had the timing belt off when they replaced the head gasket. They said no. Is that possible? I'm willing to be reasonable with them, but I want to find a fair way through.Thanks, in advance, for your help.
