Headlight switch smoke

Vehicle Information: Model: 911SC; Year: 1980; Body Type: Targa; Total Mileage: 77,000;

I'm finishing another persons ill fated restoration project. I'm wiring up all the lights. Headlight, running lights, Fog lights, turn signal, tail lights, ETC, all worked well... Until in a final check out of the fog light switch & rear window defogger switch, the Headlight switch started to smoke. I have not touched it. Terminal # 58 was hot, with or without the wire on it. As I rotated the dimmer POT it seemed crunchy but the dash light faded it and out. Do the switches just go bad? The car has not been run in 10 years. The pot coil on the side of the switch looks to be melted.Could I have a hot wire touching ground? shouldn't a fuse blow?I don't mind purchasing a new switch. I just don't want to fry that one.RORY Cell 812 344 8990
