After the engine in my 2003 Boxster S (manual transmission) has warmed up, I hear a whine/whistle tone, about 400 Hz, that seems to come from the engine compartment. It most often becomes noticeable at around 2000 RPM, and its pitch is constant -- independent of engine speed, road speed, or transmission gear selection. It ceases when I back off on the throttle. It usually occurs when the engine is loaded, but it's sometimes possible to make it happen with the car stopped and the transmission in neutral by maintaining about 2,000 RPM, but my foot is usually not steady enough to hold it. I'm guessing that it involves some kind of sympathetic vibration. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated.
